Tank Extraction & Burner Controls

Project Duration: 2007-2008
Works Included: The brief was to design a system to extract fumes from the top of a Bitumen tank and send them to a burner for destruction safely. The design was to remain safe at all times even during variations in the fumes being extracted from the tank and changes to the burner requirements.

Project Outline:

The design of the tank fume extraction system was critical to reducing odours from the site and to reduce the noxious fumes from being vented. The design included all of the instrumentation and electrical design required to ensure that the tank could always vent at its required rate during both filling and unloading. At all times the tank had to be kept within tight pressure tolerances with the fume extraction running.

The second part to the design was to send the extracted air from the tank and have this burnt in the hot oil burners.

The electrical design had to meet:

  • Control fume levels to below the Lower Explosive Limit (LEL)
  • Bypass valve control to meet LEL requirements
  • Ensure that on start up the extraction lines are below the LEL
    • Pre-purge of the system to meet Hazardous Area requirements
  • Redundant measurement of LEL
  • Control burner air flow rate using VSD control
  • Meet Hazardous Area requirements
  • Safe Shutdown of system in case of fault
